Social security
In Switzerland, every working person is protected against various life situations. Various deductions are made from wages for social security purposes.
In the event of long-term illness or an accident, health and accident insurance (link to health topic page) or invalidity insurance (IV) comes into effect.
In the event of temporary unemployment, the unemployment insurance comes into effect.
In the event of disability, old age or a death, every employee is entitled to old-age and survivors’ insurance (AHV)/IV and occupational benefits. There is also what is known as the third pillar, which represents private provision. This involves every employee paying into a third pillar account with a bank or insurance company.
In the event of maternity, maternity benefits are available in Switzerland for 14 weeks. You can find more information here
And anyone who is already a parent is entitled to family allowances. These are paid out together with your wages if you are in employment.
